ISLAMABAD: France has said that neither it nor its allies are fighting a war against Russia, following a Western decision to provide heavy tanks to Ukraine to repel the Russian invasion, an official said on Thursday.

French official says sending military equipment is not co-belligerence

The foreign ministry spokesman Anne Claire Legendre said in a statement that France is not at war with Russia nor its partners are. The sending of military equipment does not constitute co-belligerence.

The statement comes after German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock said on Wednesday that it was important for western partners to support Ukraine with military aid.

Germany had said that it would provide fourteen of its top-of-the-line Leopard II tanks to Ukraine, a much-awaited and important decision that opens the floodgates for other European countries armed with such tanks to follow the suit.

The US officials have also announced sending of 31 Abrams tanks.
