Sri Lanka’s Ex-president Sirisena Found Guilty in Easter Attacks Case

ISLAMABAD: Sri Lanka Supreme Court on Thursday announced the verdict 2019 Easter Sunday attacks case. Ex-president Maithripala Sirisena was found ask the SC asked him to pay the petitioners Sri Lankan rupees 100 million as compensation.

The case relates to failure to take action against the attacks. At that time, Sirisena was Sri Lanka’s president and defense minister, and a number of countries had alerted his government regarding the threat, according to Sri Lankan media reports.

Easter attacks killed 350 people in 3 cities

In April 2019, as total of 350 people at churches and hotels were killed in suicide bombings in the cities of Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa on Easter Sunday.

The ex-inspector general of police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara, former defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando, former chief of state intelligence Nilantha Jayawardena, and former national intelligence chief Sisira Mendis, who were holding office at the time, were also found guilty.

The ruling responded to a total of 12 petitions that had been file by a number of parties, which argued the case that through negligence and failure to stop the attacks their fundamental rights were violated.
